Erin Thompson

Erin Thompson is a 2010 George Mason University Learning Into Future Environments (LIFE) Program graduate. She has been a dedicated self-advocate since her high school years. In 2007, while volunteering at The Arc of Northern Virginia, Erin and a colleague initiated a bill in the Virginia legislature to update the language in Virginia laws to replace the outdated and pejorative term “retarded” with “intellectually disabled.” Erin and her colleagues’ work helped to inspire a national movement to get rid of the “R” word.

Erin has continued her efforts as an accomplished and passionate advocate for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Erin joined MAG Aerospace in February 2022 as an Administrative Assistant in their headquarters office in Fairfax, Virginia, and serves as their Best Buddies Ambassador.  Erin worked for Rosetta Stone in Arlington, Virginia for 11 years where she assisted with reception and administrative duties while being engaged in key organizations. Erin is currently on the Board of the Down Syndrome Association of Northern Virginia (DSANV) and is a Best Buddies Ambassador. She has previously been on the Board of the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS), the HSC Foundation, and the Parent Education Advocacy Training Center (PEATC).

Disability Pride Month

J
uly is Disability Pride Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the diversity, uniqueness, and contributions of people with disabilities. It’s an opportunity to promote visibility and raise awareness about the issues affecting the disabled community, while also highlighting the achievements and strength of individuals with disabilities.

This month allows us to reflect on the progress that has been made in creating a more inclusive and accessible society, while also acknowledging the work that still needs to be done to ensure equality for all. It’s a time to dismantle stereotypes, challenge stigmas, and advocate for the rights of people with disabilities. As we commemorate Disability Pride Month, let’s come together to support and empower people with disabilities, and work towards a world where everyone is valued, included, and embraced for who they are.

Join us in celebrating Disability Pride Month and stand in solidarity with the disabled community. Let’s continue to strive for a more accessible, equitable, and accepting society for all. We look forward to learning more and advocating for disability pride together
