Self- Advocate Spotlight

Delmar Davis has published his long awaited book that he says was 61 years in the making. Delmar is 86 years old with cerebral palsy. He has not let that stop him in life.

“Through his deep faith in God and strong self determination, Delmar pulled himself out of depression and oppression, making opportunities for himself in employment, interpersonal relationships, self expression, and advocacy work. While constantly striving to achieve his goals and better himself, Delmar helped his family, friends, church, colleagues, and community. As a church deacon, song writer, public speaker, painter, and self advocate, he became a leader, role model, and father figure to those who needed to see a hero that looked like they did.

Delmar’s account of his struggles and hard won triumphs opens a dialogue that doesn’t end when you read the last page. You will come to understand that the man in the wheelchair on the street, whose spoken words you may not readily understand, has an amazing story to tell, one that will give you inspiration and wisdom for your own life challenges. This book is a door opened, an inside story of hardship, persistence, and the hard work it takes to be heard, to be seen, to be acknowledged, and ultimately to be celebrated.”

Delmar’s book “ That’s What I’m Talking About: The Life of an Ol’ Country Boy with Cerebral Palsy” is available in Paperback and on Kindle through Amazon.

People First- 31 Years and Counting

In 1993, Kevin Smith attended the Arc National Convention in Nashville, Tennessee, where he learned about People. Realizing what a great program it is, he brought it back with him. With the support Joan Arnold, a former Executive Director of the Arc of the Mid-Ohio Valley, he successfully implemented the program in our state. To learn more about the origins of People First in West Virginia, you are invited to watch the interview conducted by Melissa Southall with Kevin Smith. You can view the video by clicking here.

While we proud to celebrate 31 years of this important work in West Virginia and hope to continue for another 31 years, your help is needed. As we are excited to hold the 31st Annual People First of WV Conference, remember that People First is more than just the conference. To ensure our continued success for another 31 years, we encourage self-advocates to participate in meetings, whether they are local, state, or teleconferences, Disability Advocacy Day and other events throughout the year. Also, next year will be an election year for state officers. Anyone interested should contact Morgan Spicer or Alexis Ullmann about the different offices you can run for and the qualifications. Leadership is an important part of self-advocacy and we hope you will consider running for office.
